El Mac Solo Show Opening @ Fifty24SF

el Mac @ Fifty24SF

Graf artist El Mac opened his first solo show at Fifty24SF Gallery. The turn out was amazing. He's got a lot of fans here in SF. Probably cause he's been spray painting the city for years with the likes of other artists such as Retna and Reyes.

El Mac had several rather large paintings up unframed on canvas. They are beautiful and haunting at the same time. They appear almost abstract when you're standing close to them, but if you stand back a good distance (like you might if they were painted on the side of a building, they look almost photographic. It's quite interesting as I was comparing larger pictures to thumbnails. Not cheap either. Between $6-$7k each.

He brought a number of drawings done in pencil. In contrast to the paintings, these are small and look frail like he was barely using any pressure when drawing them. They were going for $600 each.

There was also two prints available. My favorite is this greenish/blue one that was also featured on the Subscriber cover of Juxtapoz. He uses his "maze" effect for shading and texture which just blows my mind. The print will go online tomorrow for $250 I believe at the Fifty24SF online shop.

One of the highlights was meeting Kim who is El Mac's gf and model.

the other print is this red and black illustration.

So inspired were we, that we drove over to Gough and Turk to look at one of his most impressive pieces which is a collaboration with Reyes done a couple of years ago. The colors still burn like they were painted yesterday.

While El Mac's first solo show is amazing, I still like his collaborations with Retna and Reyes better. You know, the whole is greater than the sum of the parts. Still El Mac has a very promising future a head of him as a solo artist as well.
